Gaming’s Longest-Running Punchline Retires
May 7th, 20093D Realms is closing up shop, and Duke Nukem Forever is no more (dare we hope?). As happy as I am that I’ll no longer have to read bad jokes about the game, I truly loved Apogee’s games, and even several 3D Realms titles. In memoriam:
- Crystal Caves
- Duke Nukem
- Rise of the Triad
- Commander Keen
- Wolfenstein 3D
- Blake Stone
- Wacky Wheels
- Xenophage
- Duke Nukem 3D
- Shadow Warrior
- Prey
And those were just the good ones.

To be honest, this probably increases the chances that the game will finally be released, as someone actually capable of releasing a game will probably take over the development.
As for 3d Realms.. I guess you can’t develop the same game for 13 years without releasing anything else of your own during that time… Who knew?

Also, just to clarify, I think 3d Realms is only responsible for actually developing a handful of those… ROTT, D3D, and Shadow Warrior. The rest they may have helped publish, but someone else developed it.

I really enjoyed Prey. It had one of the most personally intense boss battles in my gaming career.

Supposedly Apogee and such aren’t affected.

Man, Commander Keen was awesome. That is all.

If anyone is interested in replaying Commander Keen, it’s available on Steam for $5: http://store.steampowered.com/app/9180/
Mostly I’ve found I’m much worse at it than I used to be.
