Think Tanks?

April 8th, 2009

Will Wright has left EA to form a “think tank” that will let him explore new ideas.  As far as I can tell, this basically means that Will Wright is forming his own development house, allowing him to do whatever he wants… which is basically what he’s been able to do since Sim City, so I’m unclear on why this is a particularly strong vehicle for him.  That said, anything that lets Wright make more games is fine with me (especially since I wasn’t particularly enthused by Spore).

I still don’t get why everyone loves Will Wright. I understand The Sims made a lot of money, but I think it’s incredibly weak as a game, and the only other thing he made that I had any fun with at all was SimCity, which entertained me for about an hour. I can’t bring myself to be excited about Wright’s games.

Also, I realize the press release used the phrase “think tank,” but it’s unclear to me that it’s being used to mean anything of substance in this case. Mostly it makes me think that he doesn’t know what a think tank is.

The SimCities were great games and the first Sims entertained me in college for a couple weeks… He’s certainly carved out his niche in the industry and was able to sell a ton of games because of it.

I still think Robosport was one of his best games, though that could just be nostalgia talking. I’m not sure why no one else has come up with a proper update for the game.
