Sex is just a (mini-)game

February 18th, 2009

God of War 3 director Stig Asmussen on whether God of War 3 will include sex minigame(s):

“If it works, and it plays into the experience, then we’ll do it,” he says. “If it doesn’t work, I have no problem saying “this is turning into a gimmick” and putting those resources somewhere else.”

Um, Stig… I hate to break it to you, but the sex minigames from all of the God of War games were always a gimmick.  I’m not sure if you’re trying to make sure your own addition to the pantheon of sex minigames has some sort of artistic merit or something, though for the game’s sake, I hope not. The minigames were always just a somewhat humorous little addition to the series and I have no doubt that another one will find its way into God of War 3 as well, whether it perfectly “plays into the experience” or not.

I for one wish they would eliminate the sex/nudity, or at least give me the option to turn it off. My wife likes to watch me game and it’s ridiculous that I have to be careful what I play in front of her for fear of skewing her attitude about gaming. Crap like this in games is the reason games forever struggle to get respect as a mature pastime. Who knows, maybe I’m just too old.

    Cisco-

What, your wife doesn’t enjoy a little… excitement in your games? ;)

    hehe, yeah, exactly.

To make a short story very long, my wife went to college for mass comm/marketing and worked in the computer lab a lot. There were several guys who “lived” in there, gaming online all hours of the day. According to my wife, they were nasty smelly guys and just sat their transfixed for ours at a time (sound familiar?). She never knew what they were playing, just that it was some online game.

That being the case, my wife (and I think lots of women) is predisposed to assume that games in general, and online games in particular are somewhat of a dirty little hobby. I’ve spent YEARS slowly but surely educating her to the contrary, with games like Mario Kart, Puzzle Quest, Professor Layton, Brain Training, etc. She has come a long way and now she’ll even watch me play games like Resident Evil.

But for some reason, once you put boobs on screen or sex, she knee jerks back to those days where nasty young men are obsessed with gaming. I really don’t care if they include that stuff or not, but it would really be great for me personally, if they would allow you to turn it off. I was a big fan of the God of War games, but I always had to “be careful” playing when my wife was around because you never know what may happen next. It’s a gigantic pain.
