A Brief Digression On Business Travel

February 10th, 2009

Look, Scott of Crispy Gamer got profiled in the Times!  He’s talking about his ability to play games on airplanes, thus rendering his travel much more palatable.

There’s a personal and nitpicky objection below the jump.

As an aside, as a frequent business traveler myself, I have to differ with Jones’s take on “business travel.”  Jones portrays himself as the atypical flyer who isn’t stressed out or unhappy with air transportation.  I was impressed, until I read that he flies two or three times a month.  That’s not a business traveler.  A business traveler is someone who travels two or three times a week, who leaves early on Sundays or Mondays and returns late on Thursdays or Fridays, often red-eyeing backwards and forwards.  They’re often working with teams or clients and don’t have the luxury of setting their own hours.  Delays are an assumption and they spend more time in airports than they care to think about.  They often fly into tiny cities with unpleasant airports and long secruity.  (Think sales people or consultants.)  That’s why they’re stressed out and unhappy.

I can understand why Jones likes to fly, but it’s very idiosyncratic to his job and particular circumstances.
