Easy A
January 28th, 2009I’m all for mainstream acceptance of gaming, but this seems like it verges on self-parody. (Or at least a gut course.) Plus, it’s likely to backfire and result in more anti-gaming rhetoric and attitudes.

I read about this earlier today. Apparently it’s not a normal course — it’s primarily run by a student, with a faculty advisor onlooking.

That’s even worse. Credit for a student-led course that involves simply playing a game?

Yeah, I don’t know. I didn’t say it was a good idea.

To be honest, is this much worse than getting some credit for taking a sports class, which is probably offered in several schools?

Worse? No. As bad? Yes.
If you’re in some sports medicine program or something, I could see that being valid. That said, generally I’d be opposed to credit for Intro to Badminton as well.

I’m actually not sure that it’s so horrible as long as a school imposes limits as to how much these kinds of classes (sports or computer games or whatever) can only count so much towards a degree… And my guess is that that’s true of most schools. I think some diversity in classes, even if it means playing a sport (or in this case, a computer game) is not such a bad thing, again, as long as it’s not something you can do for a good portion of your credits.
Hopefully this doesn’t give you anything more than some kind of generic credit as well…

I’m guessing it’s an elective. Also, I’d bet that UC Berkeley offers plenty of off-beat elective courses, but they don’t get in the news like this one.
