Peer Pressure
January 13th, 2009What would possess an otherwise normal reviewer to give a game of the year nod to a game they didn’t like all that much? This is an industry that takes perverse pleasure in hating things that other people like, after all, and you’d have to imagine that - when you’re not evem in a room with other people - the “pressure” you’re under is pretty much non-existent.
I can’t take a guy whose main complaint with the game is the marketing all that seriously to begin with, but to then blame other people for his problems takes a ot of chutzpah. Offering this type of opinion up front would be of far greater use to the gaming community.

I’m glad he finally came clean, but that is an absolutely spineless move. He should be ashamed of himself, and he shouldn’t be reviewing games anymore. I do hope no one will take him seriously in the future. And I say that as someone who loves Fallout 3. What’s the point of a critic who won’t tell you if he doesn’t like something?

First, I totally agree with Rob.
Second, I think this is part and parcel with games like GTAIV, MGS4, and Zelda getting arguably inflated scores.
Third, this is one of the main reasons I don’t usually take reviews seriously. When reviewers are more concerned with people who disagree with them getting angry, or concerned about being the cool kid who hated a game everyone loved, I just get sick. I listen to some podcasts with members who disliked fallout3. No one gave them grief about it. They simply asked what they didn’t like, considered it, and moved on. As it should be. Who cares if you like or didn’t like it. But if you’re a reviewer, you should at least be honest about what you like and didn’t and why.

While this would be stupid in any situation, it also seemed particularly stupid with this game because opinion definitely wasn’t universal on it. Some people absolutely loved it and others thought it merely adequate (I think Edge only gave it a 7 if I recall correctly). I personally loved the game… there hasn’t been a game I’ve been able to pour over 50 hours into in a long time (not to mention a game that Megan also poured 70 hours of time into at the same time I was putting in my own 50). But I can certainly see why people might not like it too… This guy should be ashamed to admit that this is apparently how he operates… not that he didn’t like Fallout 3.
