Games I Can’t Care About: Assassin’s Creed

June 9th, 2008

This is old hat for many of you, but I recently picked up AC on sale at Best Buy… and I can’t bring myself to play more than 5 minutes of it.  I just can’t bring myself to care.  Everything about it, from the cutscenes to the lengthy training video to the pointless story, grates on my consciousness like nails on a chalkboard.  I know Jeff actually enjoyed the game, but it still amazes me that there are heralded games that so actively repel me.  I don’t despise it as much as I loathed Elite Beat Agents, but the hatred is replaced by an apathetic void that compels me to throw it into a corner and never touch it again.

Are there games that you hated from the moment you laid eyes on them?

Where you at? I’ll buy it? :)

I know how you feel, I absolutely LOATH some games that considered “must buy” games. Honestly, it almost makes me feel good when it happens because it alleviates my fear that I may like a game simply because I’m told too.

That being said, I adored EBA. I recognize it’s not for everyone but I’m sad to hear you didn’t dig it.

I could *not* get the rhythm working. Doing my absolute best, I failed constantly. And I’m just fine at other rhythm games. The style was amusing, but the gameplay alternately bored and frustrated me.

To be clear, I liked the game… although I haven’t finished it yet (not even that close). The graphics are gorgeous, though…

But, the flag collecting seems pretty silly, and I agree that there is very little mission variation. Climbing and jumping all over the place is pretty fun though. I’ll get back to it someday soon, although I’m going to have to relearn the controls. =)

I had a few problems getting the hang of it too, but once I plugged in some nice headphones (the big kind that completely cover your ears…NERD ALERT!), things got a lot more approachable. The little speakers of the DS REALLY impair ones ability to make out the subtlety of the beats, especially on the wild covers the game uses where the beat you expect is often just a bit different that what is actually there. Once I got used to it with the headphones, now I’m able to play fine without, but initially I struggled on several songs without the headphones. shrug.

Assassin’s Creed sucks. Fortunately, my roommate bought it, not me, so that lesson didn’t cost me $60.

Maybe I’ll try EBA with headphones. I liked the game but was lousy at it.
