A Question For Which I Have No Answer
March 6th, 2008Your preferred next-generation DVD format fails. Your biggest competitor backed the winning format. What do you do? Deny that you’re considering bringing out a new disc drive to play that format!
Naturally, I have no idea why Microsoft would possibly want to do this. What is the disadvantage to acknowledging that you’re thinking about supporting Blu-Ray? It takes away a competitive advantage from Sony, commits you to nothing, and it’s already widely suspected as it is.

No way to know what’s FUD until something more solid surfaces. For what it’s worth, Microsoft said before HD-DVD died that they would consider Blu-Ray support if it won.

I think denial is the right move……for now. The blu-ray win has given sony some steam, but it hasn’t sent their sales THAT much higher. Even with the win, the marketplace is still a bit uncertain. I think MS’s best move is to wait until the blu-ray steam dies down a little bit, THEN come out with the announcement. Otherwise, they risk giving Sony the critical mass they need.
