Console Crysis
January 17th, 2008Label this rumor or speculation or whatever you like, but there’s no question in my mind that Crysis will make it out onto at least 1 of the “Next-gen” consoles at some point in the future.
The latest “official” rumor, if you will, comes from Playstation World UK, who says that it will be coming to the PS3 but not the 360 due to “technical reasons.” Despite EA’s past denials, I don’t think there was ever a question of whether it would make it onto a console. Crytek’s last game, Far Cry, started as a PC only game, but after its success spawned several console versions.
Now, given the poor sales of the game (likely due, in part, to an extremely competitive holiday season and sky-high system requirements) but it’s mostly rave reviews, don’t you think EA would like to try and recoup their large investment in the game in the much more accessible console market?
On the flipside, had Crysis been wildly successful on the PC, do you think that EA would pass up the opportunity to double or triple that success by porting it to a console, especially given their popularity on the medium?
So basically, no matter what happened in terms of its sales, it made a lot of sense that Crysis would eventually come out for at least one console, even if it meant sacrificing some graphical quality. Whether it only comes out for the PS3, or 360, or both, I don’t know. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say it would come out on both unless they simply couldn’t deal with the sacrifices they’d have to make for one version (or if MS or Sony pays them a lot of money).
But there’s no question in my mind that it’s coming.

When you’re making a lot of money, you can afford artistic gestures like refusing to compromise on quality. At this point, I’m guessing they’ll go multiplatform as soon as they can get a development team operational.
As for Crysis’s failure, there’s not much doubt in my mind that it was overdesigned. If your game’s distinguishing characteristic is its vivid beauty, you’d better be sure that most people can afford to see it. Why would I pay for another version of Far Cry if I can’t run it well?

“As for Crysis’s failure, there’s not much doubt in my mind that it was overdesigned.”
Becareful with misleading, subjective opinions. first, Crysis for PC was developed for a very specific audience. Furthermore, I’ve read through various sites and forums that medium settings are very doable for many of your graphics cards, and even exceed the best console graphics.

Laesp-
Well, it doesn’t work very well on my Nvidia 7900-powered laptop (2GB RAM, 2 Ghz Core2 Duo) unless I turned it to the absolute lowest settings, which looks like utter crap. I realize it’s not the most powerful computer in the world, but it still plays most stuff very well (including other power-hungry games like Company of Heroes).
“for a very specific audience.”
Yes, those who spend 3k on their computers every year, which is, unfortunately for them, not many people. =)
