The First Nail?

October 31st, 2007

I’ve said before that Sony had better hope that MGS4 and FFXIII don’t get delayed.  Well, so much for that.  MGS4 was just delayed to Q2 2008 “in order to make further improvements to the quality of the game and provide even greater enjoyment for more customers worldwide.”  That means the earliest it could come would be April 2008 (if my calculations are correct, despite Kotaku suggesting March), although my (admittedly arbitrary) guess is that it will actually come out closer to June, or be delayed again until closer to the holiday season (if they’re any indication, both MGS2 and 3 launched in mid-November, and MGS1 launched at the end of September).

Sony has already had to excise backwards compatibility and slash the price of their PS3 $200 within the first year of launch.  They’ve just doubled their projection for losses in their game unit to over 100 billion yen for the year. Having perhaps their biggest potential system seller delayed even a little as the 360 and Wii continue to pick up steam can’t be making them feel any better.

Jesus Christ. I JUST bought a ps3. I thought that I’d only have to waita few months for MGS4…not nearly a year. This is SSBB all over again.

    @Dave,

Really? I thought everyone was in agreement that both MGS and FF would likely be delayed again. In fact, most people I talked to thought that either Galaxy or Smash would be delayed simply because releasing them so close made no sense. So, neither of these delays really surprise me at all. Although the MGS delay IS troubling simply due to the fact that the delay isn’t set to a specific date, but rather a quarter. When that happens, you can almost guarantee a further delay, as the poster says, it wouldn’t make sense to delay it until the holidays of next year, especially if they want to have a 360 version ready as well (uh oh, he said it!). I’m waiting for another FF delay as well.

    Should read,

it WOULD make sense to delay it until the holidays of next year,

I knew it was delayed into next year, but i figured that the Q1 2008 was set in stone….since they bragged about the worldwide launch and were finally showing playable sections of the game. i did not expect to wait 5-7 months for the game. All I can say is that uncharted better be the best thing EVER.

    Dave-

Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Ratchet and Clank are both quality titles. For downloadables, Super Stardust HD is pretty good, and I’ve heard good things about Calling all Cars and Everyday Shooter. I have a feeling Uncharted will be in B-B+ territory. I’m looking forward to it, though.

If none of those are to your liking, welcome to your shiny new Blu-Ray player. =)

    @ jeff.

I already have sigma. it’s called ninja gaiden black and it cost me 9 dollars.

You know I hear people talk about the ps3 game drought but i never actually understood it until now. i guess I assumed RFOM would last longer than it did.

RNC is an option but paying 60 bucks for a 10-15 hour game that doens’t do anything terribly different from its predecessors(all 5 of them) doesn’t really sit well with me.

BTW why so down on uncharted? I mean, the character models are ugly as hell but the gameplay and environments look solid. And in the absence of a true POP game, it looks to fill the nice nicely.

I saw the game in person at Lollapalooza in August. I tried to play it, but the guy in front of me refused to let me in. So I watched about 15 minutes of it and it looked like it would probably be fun, but it still had some issues. The framerate didn’t seem completely solid to me and some of the animation, while detailed, looked a little stuttery. Enemies also seemed to take absolutely forever to take down… not completely unlike many games, but it still looked like a bit much. I’m also not sure if the “cover” mechanic will work as well as it did in, say, Gears of War.

Hopefully the issues I saw have been ironed out in the months since and we’ll have an excellent game. I’m just thinking it’ll be more of a “very good” to “great” game rather than a truly “A” game.

What does “set in stone” mean exactly? I have yet to see anything in gaming fit that description. :)
