Not Ready To Rumble
September 22nd, 2007I realize I’m probably in the minority on this one, but I’m actually pleased that the Dualshock 3 isn’t going to feature some sort of “next-gen rumble” capability. Rumble can be a nice immersion tool when properly - and infrequently - implemented, but more often than not it’s overused and ends up distracting me much more than it ever actually helps.
Do we really need to feel the “hum of a lightsaber’s energy as it powers up”?

To be honest, while I’m really happy that rumble is coming (I think it can be quite effective, actually… like the Big Daddy stomping around in Bioshock and in Metroid Prime the Sky City actually feels unstable in places with the rumble), my biggest gripe is the fact that they’re not making ANY other changes to the controller. The L2/R2 buttons are easily the worst part of the PS3 controller, and while I’m sure they know this, they’re doing absolutely nothing to correct it.

I agree, I love rumble, but only if it’s used at the right moments and no others. If its overused, it may as well be eliminated.

The worst part is that they kept the same battery so the rumble actually cust the battery life down to 15 hours.
