A Post Of Pure Bile

July 25th, 2007

Clearly, the reason that Nintendo doesn’t localize niche Japanese games for the US is because they’re anti-American.

I know, I know, the post is a bit tongue in cheek (I hope).  But the idea that hordes of gamers are clamoring for obscure, bizarre, and hopelessly Japanese games is a ridiculous idea.  Most people - myself included - couldn’t care less whether such titles are released here, and I suspect I’m more predisposed to give these games a chance than the average player.  I get the frustration, but you can’t expect a company to cater to your tastes for no other reason than the fact that you would like it.   They’d like to, you know, make some money.

By the way, I hated Elite Beat Agents too.  So there.

Elite Beat Agents? Was that the new Wii beat game they showed at E3 or am I thinking of something else?

I don’t get the gist of your post, was the first paragraph sarcasm? I’ve never heard anything described as “hopelessly Japanese” unless you mean some of the incredibly bizzare obscure anime shows and other random things they have over there that don’t make any sense to the West even when translated to your native language. But if you mean stuff like Fire Emblem that rarely makes it to the US, I don’t think more of that would be so bad.

    Tounge in cheek?

There isn’t a link in this post (that I saw) but I think that he is referring to a post on another site (i can’t recall which right now) where someone was writing about Nintendo not giving us games like Cooking Navi and Tingle RPG on the DS. Anyway, it was definitely a tongue in cheek (said in a serious manner, but not with serious meaning, spoken with humorous irony more or less).

Anyway, Elite Beat Agents is a western localization of a Japanese rhythm game where you control 4 cheerleaders as they help people fix their problems. It’s pretty wacky but it’s damn fun. One of my favorite DS games (but I like rhythm games).

Also, speaking of the word “Rhythm”, I’ve had a lot of luck using it as a word in games of Hangman. Does anyone play hangman anymore? Probably not. I digress.

    cisco-

Actually, it’s funny you should mention hangman. I discovered the word “Rhythm” several years ago and have used it every time I play someone new. It always stumps the hell out of them since there are no real vowels in it.

  6. FX-1 Says:

    I always choose y when I run out of vowels . . . but that’s just me. :)

  7. Jeff Says:

    FX:

Yeah, but by that time you’ve already run through 5 turns and you’ll only have a y in the middle of the word, which will often stump people. The game can differ for each person, but I think somewhere around 6 turns is where you typically lose. =)

    We’re talking about hangman . . . .

Just thought I make sure people realize how random this is incase they were so surprisedm they didn’t notice.
